Why Do Gutters Need to Be Cleared?

The main purpose of a gutter system is to collect rainwater from the roof and direct it safely away from the building.

For that to happen, both the gutters and the outlets leading to the downpipes need to remain clear.

Typical debris found in gutters includes leaves and small twigs, moss dislodged from roof tiles, pine needles and seeds, silt, and other organic material carried onto the roof during windy weather.

A small amount may not cause an immediate problem. Over time, however, wet debris can compact and restrict the flow of water. During periods of heavy rainfall, the gutter may then fill faster than water can escape.

What Can Happen When Gutters Become Blocked?

One of the clearest signs of a blocked gutter is water spilling over the edge during heavy rain.

That water may repeatedly run down external walls, splash against windows and doors, or collect around the base of the property. Over time, this can contribute to staining, algae and other organic growth on exterior surfaces.

Water and wet debris sitting in a gutter also add unnecessary weight to the system. This can place additional strain on gutter brackets and joints and, particularly on older guttering, may contribute to sagging or leaks.

The purpose of gutter clearing is therefore not simply to make the gutters look tidy. It is to keep the rainwater system working properly and help direct water safely away from the property.

How Often Should Gutters Be Cleared?

There is no single gutter-clearing schedule that suits every property.

For many homes and buildings, having the gutters inspected and cleared at least once a year is a sensible starting point. However, some properties may need attention more frequently.

Properties surrounded by mature trees or with overhanging branches can accumulate leaves and other debris much more quickly. Roofs with significant moss growth can also deposit moss into the gutters throughout the year, while exposed locations may experience additional wind-blown debris.

The design of the roof and guttering can make a difference too. Valleys, awkward roof sections and particular gutter runs may naturally collect more debris than others.

A property with several of these factors may benefit from gutter clearing more than once a year. A relatively open property with little surrounding vegetation may require it less frequently.

The important point is to base the maintenance schedule on the individual property rather than waiting until the gutters overflow or a downpipe becomes blocked.

When Is the Best Time to Clear Gutters?

Autumn is one of the most important times of year for gutter maintenance, particularly for properties surrounded by deciduous trees.

As leaves begin to fall, they can quickly accumulate in gutters and around downpipe outlets. Clearing gutters during or towards the end of the main leaf-fall period can help prepare the rainwater system for the wetter months ahead.

Spring can also be a useful time to check gutters. Winter weather may have introduced twigs, moss and other debris, particularly on properties surrounded by trees or where there is significant moss growth on the roof.

There can also be good reason to check gutters following periods of particularly windy weather or prolonged heavy rainfall, especially where the property has experienced blockages before.

How Do You Know Your Gutters Need Clearing?

You do not always need to see inside the gutter to spot a potential problem. There are several warning signs that the rainwater system may need attention:

• water overflowing from the gutters during rainfall
• moss, weeds or other vegetation visibly growing from the gutter
• leaves or debris visible from ground level
• staining or water marks below the gutter line
• sections of guttering beginning to sag
• little or no water discharging from a downpipe during heavy rain

What About Moss Coming From the Roof?

Roof moss is a common source of gutter debris.

As moss loosens from roof tiles, rainfall and wind can gradually move it down the roof and into the gutters. On properties with significant moss growth, gutters may begin filling again relatively quickly even after they have been cleared.

This is why gutter maintenance and roof maintenance are often connected. If a large proportion of the material being removed from the gutters is moss, it may be worth assessing the condition of the roof as well.
